How to Collapse and Expand Parts of Your Document in Word

A brand-new feature was presented in Word 2013 that allows you to collapse components of your file and also broaden them when you want to see that web content once again. This attribute makes it simpler to discover and also watch only what you want.

KEEP IN MIND: We used Word 2013 to show this function.

To do this, you need to use the Heading designs in Word to layout the headings in your paper. When you relocate the mouse over the space to the left of a heading, a best arrow displays. When you click on the arrowhead, the message listed below the heading is concealed.

The material below the heading collapses and just the heading screens. To check out the web content once more, just click the arrow to the left of the heading again.

KEEP IN MIND: When you collapse a heading, only the web content as much as the next heading of equal or lesser value is collapsed. Notice in the image below that all the content below “Section 1” is fallen down approximately “Section 2” since “Section 2” is the at exact same heading degree (Heading 1) as “Section 1.”

When we broke down “Subheading A,” which is a Heading 2, it falls down the web content approximately “Section 2” because that heading level is higher than “Subheading A.” However, when we fell down “Section 1,” “Subheading A” and the web content below it was fallen down too due to the fact that it is a lesser heading degree than “Section 1.”

Word supplies a fast means to collapse or increase all headings at the same time. To do this, right-click on any heading as well as move your computer mouse over “Expand/Collapse” on the popup food selection. Then, pick “Collapse All Headings” from the submenu to fall down all the headings in your document, or “Expand All Headings” to increase all the headings once more.

You can likewise set up Word to automatically fall down particular heading degrees by default. To do this, make sure the “Home” tab is active on the ribbon. If it isn’t, click it to trigger it.

Location the arrow in a heading formatted with the heading degree you want to collapse (such as Heading 1) and click the “Paragraph Settings” dialog box switch in the “Paragraph” area of the “Home” tab.

On the “Indents and also Spacing” tab of the “Paragraph” dialog box, select the “Collapsed by default” check box to the right of the “Outline degree” drop-down listing so there is a check mark in the box. If you do not have the cursor in a heading, the “Collapsed by default” is grayed out and also can not be selected.

NOTE: This modification just relates to the current heading as well as not all headings at the same level, unless you change the heading design to include this adjustment.

Note that you can only collapse as well as expand parts of your record when you’re seeing it on your computer system. When you print the paper, all headings are automatically expanded.

This feature serves for seeing your document as a summary, although you can additionally use the Navigation Pane to view a synopsis of your paper and easily jump to parts of your document, along with to restructure your document.
